Motorcycles Save Gas.

Motorcycles do save on gas you know. Even though they can be more dangerous to get around on is a nasty fact. One problem with them being dangerous is that people in cars and large SUVs' just do not pay attention. One way to get around some of that danger would be to leave just a little earlier for work before all the mad dashers get on the road. Perhaps the company you work for would allow some who ride to come in earlier by thirty minutes to an hour. Then leave that same thirty to an hour earlier from work.
Also, if more motorcycles would become primary get to work vehicles instead of staying in the garage waiting for the weekend, there would be more of them on the road and that would make people more aware of them. The more motorcycles on the road would most likely reduce city congestion and idle time in traffic. Parking garages would actually generate more income by making certain parking decks exclusive to two and three wheelers. A parking spot that once had revenue for just one car would now have those same spots for two motorcycles. Same space but twice the money. Actually you could get far more motorcycles on just one deck than cars but you get the idea. Asian and European countries have been using two wheelers with a much better means of getting around then we Americans running around cars.
Scooters and Mopeds could be used by people who work and live in cities and help reduce parking problems. If I still worked where I was working, the trip was four miles from work each way. A Moped or Scooter getting 120 mpg would have only cost me only .03 cents a mile or $1.20 to go to and from for close to three weeks on a gallon of gas. On a motorcycle getting 50 mpg I could have done the same trip on just three dollars a week. Don't go out everyday for lunch either but rather bring in your lunch.

Alright, now you say what about bad weather such as rain. Well, on the rainy days you drive your car to work. I mean, how many days a year does it rain during the week? How many weeks do we go without rain in the forecast? Even if it rained one day a week you'd still be saving a bundle. I'd just bet that most of us spend more on fuel just for getting to and from the work place then anything else. More motorcycles, mopeds and scooters being used by more and more people would make travel on them safer. Three wheelers can haul three people around and though it might look strange now if you made a closed passenger area on them for bad weather, the style and comfort level would come around. A reduction of cars on the road who have switched to these and motorcycles would just make things safer for the masses.

The highway system with it's four lane plus of lanes could designate the far left lane for motorcycle travel only. Anything over three wheels in this lane would be subject to a thousand dollar fine. North Carolina already has a $250 amount on speeders on the interstate, which some ignore, but a thousand dollar fine would be a pretty good deterrent to anyone using the far left lane. If, instead of local and state governments not doing less for people on two wheels, the local and state D.O.T would do more to make it safer on a motorcycle, it would be a much safer form of transportation. A ton of retirement villages use golf carts for getting around and it works.

It looks like two wheeled transportation could be the thing of the future with some slight adjustments. You would get used to the change in most cases. Why do we need a 3 ton vehicle with five or six passenger seating when mostly only one person inside is driving to work?

Full Circle and Fuel Mileage Stinks.

My truck only gets 20 mpg on the highway. It is a 1992 Ford Ranger 4X4 with the 4.0 engine rated at 160 hp. Now I could see if it had the 2001 4.0 with the 207 hp version which is what I'd probably upgrade to if this current engine ever wears out. Thing is, after looking around for mileage ratings on vehicles it seems this is never put into ads unless a vehicle gets 30 plus per gallon. Otherwise they won't show what a vehicle gets. No matter, because most stickers show 18-22 mpg but that is a joke in most cases anyway.
Even over at the www.used-policecars.com site, the interceptor's show getting guess what? 18-22 mpg. I could purchase one of them for $13,000 and have a car that would last 300,000 miles easy.
So, I guess it's safe to say if the car ad doesn't say 30+ mpg then they are afraid to admit the mpg because it probably stinks.
Back when I was a kid, we called the small cars with 4's and 6's econo-slugs. Decent mpg but at a much reduced slower pace like a garden slug. Most of those early cars could barely pull a hill without gearing down to second and having all your friends get out and push. I mean, back then if you had an econo-slug and tried to race a V-8, well...you might have a had better chance if you went cliff racing.
But nowadays, the 4's and 6's seem to blow away the bigger engine vehicles on a daily basis in the power and saving gas. Guess today we can call them Econo-bee's. Today they sting the competition and get better fuel mileage. Even if you have to stop to fill up often because most have smaller fuel tanks than a large car. But a large car gets worse range so your probably stopping to fuel up about the same amount.

Back in the late seventies and early eighties, the vast majority of small vehicles basically looked like crap, performed like crap and the inside was cramped. Leg room in back was almost non-existent and very uncomfortable for anything longer than five miles. Everything about those cars were tin-canish. For those who grew up in the era of big powerful tire shredding ground shaking V-8's, the smaller cars were embarrassing to be seen in. To drive a tin can was like trying to castrate a bull. Girl's would go out with the guys in the Camaro's, Chevelle's, Nova's and Mustang's before some guy driving a Vega (unless it had a 350 shoe horned in), Opel, Fiat or Honda. Back then a Honda was this tiny little thing with wheels the size of a snapper lawn mower. Fiats had terrible mechanical issues and Opels, while some looked decent, weren't in great supply and getting them worked on, Ha!
The only cool little car to have back then was a VW Bug. And you could make a Bug fly if you knew how to work on them. They had a fairly nice sized back seat for romance to. Toyota and Mazda were "WHO?"

But the American auto industry just could not make a decent fuel economy, reliable, decent powered small car back then. They gave the whole issue more of a ho-hum attitude. Most small cars they sold were imports with the Ford or Chevy badge on them. It was a mad rush for awhile after the fuel shortage scare of the late seventies and early eighties that was all a smoke screen. Americans just weren't up to the task of making small cars and the public didn't help much either. Muscle cars got parked and sat for years because nobody wanted them. Oh! GM and Ford still made big cars just with weak crappie power plants.
Then slowly at first, American auto manufacturing began increasing horse power again until today you have vehicles that are even huger and waste more fuel again. So it all comes full circle once again. The cars have become such gas guzzling huge behemoths, that it has become a competition to see who could build the largest of large and waste the most gas. Now the panic about gas repeats itself and America falls on it's ass being behind on fuel saving vehicles.
We will see big vehicles being set to the side to rust because nobody wants them again. Like the muscle cars of long ago that you could buy for under $600 for a SuperBee, Chevelle or Roadrunner, you to will see large gas eating hunks go down in value consumerwise in the days to come.
We'll get used to paying the $3.00 a gallon just as in the past when prices went high for the day in the 70's, then came back down a little and stayed for a couple of decades. Then slowly,as we American's do, the itch for more powerful larger vehicles will begin to grow. And we will all go through this again. Our grandkids will stand with open mouths as we tell then about only paying $3.00 a gallon for gas and thinking that was bad.

Me...I can remember when a gallon was .60 some odd cents a gallon as a pre-teen. I could go to the station with a five, fillup, buy a snack and a drink, plus a magazine, ride my motorcycle all week, and still have part of that five in my pocket. When I started driving a car, I could fill up with a twenty and get change back after paying for my gas, a pack of smokes and a magazine. Not only has gas gone up but a pack of smokes is over three bucks and a magazine is four.

Racing Legend, Ronnie Sox, Passes on.

I don't know if any of the younger generation knows of Ronnie Sox, but he was a huge racing legend back in the sixties and seventies. If you were any bit of a drag race fan then you knew of The Sox and Martin team. The team tore up the strips from North Carolina to California with their Chryslers.
Ronnie was a home town boy here in Burlington North Carolina. The gas station that he once ran and tuned his cars in still stands across from the Putt Putt Golf coarse on North Church Street. The station sat vacant for years and is now an automotive detail shop. I wonder if the shop owners have any clue that the Man, so famous in racing, headed such huge success from those walls. Building those cars that were so dominant that in the early '70s, the National Hot Rod Association made them carry more weight than the Fords and Chevys they competed with. Didn't help the competition much though as Ronnie and his partner, Buddy Martin who ran the business end just kept pounding the competition week after week. Soxs' lightening fast shifts with his manual four-speed transmission could even out shift the automatics. I have a tape showing him from an inside view as he stages and then burst forth down the track. Wearing his open face white helmet and just slamming through the gears ultra quick. He was so quick that it was like he was only snapping his fingers.
His son, Dean, and himself later developed one of the largest racing operations on the East Coast which was headed right here in Burlington. Let's put it this way; they were to Drag racing as Richard Petty was to Nascar Winston Cup. Ronnie loved his fans as much as Richard loves his own.
Ronnie, with his long blond hair and red white and blue Racers will forever be embedded in the history of Drag Racing memories of those who remember. Even though his small museum which was located in Alamance before closing, shuttered its doors a few years back. I cherish my email msg from him with an invite before they closed. I only wish I had gone.

Ronnie Sox lost his battle, at age 67, to cancer on Saturday Night 4/22/06 . Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Graham North Carolina is in charge of the arrangements, which are incomplete.

OH, this is SICK.

Tom Cruise
is he going to far this time? He is reportedly going to eat the placenta from the birth of his child. Does it not seem that he is getting a bit stranger as time goes by?

I was also reading today in other news about Neil Young releasing an impeach Bush album. That should prove interesting. That's one way to get your name back in the headlines.
But the best news I read was about "The Boss" announcing another Tour. Is he still the Boss? Guess we'll find out soon.

Visit http://www.celebritycafe.com and you to can read more about these and more as it's to much for me to type. Guess I'm just being lazy today.

Making My Casting Sand.

I've been wanting to try my hand at making some motorcycle parts from sand casting.
It took me several days to sift my sand to clean out the larger, though very small, rocks. Fifty pounds worth of medium grade sand to which I'll add the bentonite clay to.
I'm going first with a coffee can foundry to melt my aluminum into ingots before the actual casting process. This way I hope to have good clean aluminum already rid of the garbage. I still need to make some sort of a metal stand to hold the foundry to prevent any tipping. Then I need to find a way to mount my blower to it to get the heat up.

A small place has already been picked for the foundry which is over clean dirt. You do not want to pour hot molten metal of any sort on a concrete floor, driveway or patio unless you have made a box of some type to hold dirt to pour over. HOT metal hitting concrete will explode throwing chunks of concrete like shrapnel from a grenade.

My ideal mold would be to have a steel permanent type to keep parts consistent. But I should be able to accomplish this fairly well with the right model for each casting. Perhaps a lost wax type system for later. The material to make lost wax models has already been sitting and waiting on me. This will be much easier when ramming up the mold in that I won't have to remove the solid model each time.

Today I spent most of my time, after mowing the lawn and trimming, trying to figure out how to pulverize my bentonite clay into fine powder. After several attempts at building something to do this it hit me..."Viola!!" I thought,"Well Duh. I had saved the old electric mixer do dads from a small kitchen mixer years ago. Why not try that?"
It worked fantastic mounted in my drill press. It wasn't very noisy at all. When first turned on the clay makes a slight hissing sound like pouring sand into a bucket but then the sound grows quieter as the mixing arm keeps pulling the ever smaller clay bits in. I watched as it would pull new in and push the powder out at the bottom only to bring it back up and through again. Though it did take an hour to do around ten pounds worth, it was ground down into a very nice powder. This stuff became just warm and would try to clump when squeezed in my hand and wanted to stick to my small wooden paddle.

Now I only need to make an aluminum gear case to mount on top of a bucket to be able to use three of these at one time on the drill press. This would greatly reduce the amount of time to grind the clay into fine powder. Then I could just turn it on and do something else while the mixer does it's thing. Perhaps this will be the first part that I cast.

Once I get my casting going, I will then proceed to doing my own anodizing of motorcycle and car parts as well.

I know what real email this came from because my system tells me. Here is where it actually comes from which is all listed below at the first of the msg below. Most systems won't show the afdyffdm@bellauk and the rest I left off in case your tempted. If you reply then you'll get so many of these things and... just don't do it! Can you find the sad face in the msg below with a tear?
By the way, don't even think of clicking on the site form they have listed. At the bottom it says that approval only takes a minute. Yea! A minute to begin ruining your life if you fall for it.

Why August for the Dream Ride?

If anyone here has been over to the Dream Ride site, you may have seen that the month and week has been picked.

"Why?" You may be asking, is it August. That's not actually fall yet.

For one, is that the month of August has no American holidays to contend with. It is also a pleasant time of year to be going somewhere weather wise.
The biggest reason though, is this is when my journey really began in respect to what a charity can accomplish. My son was born in August of 1993 with Arthrogryposis, which is a rare occurrence of around one in every 3000 births. It affects the muscles, tendons and joints. A better explanation can be found here http://www.shrinershq.org/patientedu/arthrogryposis.html.

This is also the month that I first found out, up close and personal, what a well founded charity organization can do. Through the years I have also seen and witnessed the determination of the children with handicaps of all kinds. Children that smile and go on with life as best they can and dedicated professionals who aren't motivated by uncaring greed. Parents who worry day in and day out about their child's condition but won't allow the child to know their worry. It is all a very humbling experience to see these children interact. The pressure of caring for a child with birth defects can wreak havoc on a marriedge and many won't survive it. It's all very overwhelming to deal with and very expensive.

After watching a movie called 'The Mighty', My son told me that he was glad I wasn't a magician. When I asked him why, he said "Because when I was born with problems, you didn't disappear. Thanks dad."

LYNYRD SKYNYRD COMING TO N.CAROLINA

Well hell yes!!
Skynyrd will be doing two shows here in July. The Alltel pavilion at Walnut Creek in Raleigh on 7/18 and on the 19th, they'll be performing over in Charlotte at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre.

Please excuse me but I'm just pumped up about this. Skynyrd is my favorite band of all time hands down. Wish I had kept up with them over the years but the plane crash made me put away my bass for years. Never have bought any of the newer stuff and could kick my own ass for that.
I guess I can quit shouting now as my jumping up and down about them coming is under control now.

But Hell yes!!!! I must go see them this time.

Project Stepping Stone.Com

I was doing some looking around today and wondered if I could find my old site. And Behold, I found the remnants of it still lurking around in the deep, deep dark crevices of dead sites. The buttons to navigate around the site even still worked. So I poked around just a might to look inside and view the memories of what was going to be a grand venture. The venture, when it was unfolding, was fun and I have no regrets that I tried. Strange thing about such dealings is that they don't seem real. You work and work on it for such a long time to set everything up. Planning and making decisions to drive it to reality. But it still just won't sink in until perhaps it has come and gone. Then you think "I did that." I actually pulled it off and somehow it became the reality that I had drempt of for a long time.

I am of course talking about my short lived stint as a concert promoter for fund raising and musicians. Standing on the stage that night back in February of 2005, the sounds and the smells along with getting the bands inside and awaiting the arrival of the caterer, it still felt somewhat...Unreal. Not until the sound and lighting checks were complete did it begin to sink in. For me it was strange to know that I was the promoter and had the ability to go into every corner of the place I wished. Behind the stage or up to the sound booth or anywhere else, I could do it because it was my show.
I also remember the sinking feeling when the crowd that was expected was much much smaller than hoped for. The thought crept into my head that I had failed as I sat in one of the dark seats looking at the stage and the great music coming from Lee Tyler Post. Getting up and venturing to the balcony for a look around then outside the back stage entrance. I had a smoke then wandered back inside and took up another seat by myself. After a short while my partner came up from back stage and sat down beside me. To my recollection neither of us spoke a word but just sat there in the dark together. I'm sure he must have said something at one point but I felt sick and don't remember. After he moved on, one of my brothers who had helped out with the show came over and sat down. He looked at me briefly and I at him then we sat there taking in the fine music of Abe Reid and the Spike Drivers.
The feeling was hopeless at the failure of a dead show, the realization it was not going to produce as planned.

After words, my partner paid the bands and we cleaned up the place. Outside in the parking lot, everyone involved in the show gathered around and we discussed what had gone on. I had even found out part of why it failed was not of my doing. But it was all on my shoulders and I had to deal with that part by myself. I did try not to let it show to much at the show and gathered all I had to hold my head up and be professional during the episode.

Some kind words during the meeting after the show did help. Then it hit me...I followed that dream, hard as it was to take at the end, and made it a reality.
Had I never gone through with it I'd have always wondered what if. How many others out there have wanted to do something but never went out and tried. Not everything is going to be the big success that you hope it will be and you might lose. The worst part though is never taking that risk at all.

Can You Sew?

Can you sew? If you can and would like to help the www.victoryjunction.org camp for children then please do so. You see, each year the camp has 125 children and each one receives a checkered bear as a keep sake. They are in Desperate need of these bears this year for each of the children. Summer is drawing near faster then a Honey Bee after old Pooh Bear.
Please, if you can help out then go to their site and down load the pattern. You can find it in the "How Can You Help" section under "Sewing Program."

The Victory Junction Gang Camp enriches the lives of children with chronic medical conditions or serious illness in a medically sound environment for a camp experience otherwise out of reach. This is the camp that was started by Kyle and Pattie Petty of Nascar fame in honor of their son Adam.

I cherish the time I spent raising funds for the camp in 2005. Every little bit helps and is most appreciated by the camp. This camp is the real deal. Sew...get sewing.
Latinos as Citizens

I don't want anyone to get me wrong about any foreigner wishing to come to America to live and work, Latino or otherwise. What I am against are ones who come here illegally.
America would not be what it is without all the different cultures and people from varied backgrounds.
There are many Mexicans with great talent who have come here to make a life for themselves and did it the legal way. I worked with a few at a previous employer and one in particular, Sal, became a good friend. We had a chance to talk about many issues and the one I found angered him most was the illegals working here. He told me that the legal Hispanic community was just as opposed to it as the rest of us are. They feel that it hurts everyone in the long run and makes the Hispanic community as a whole look bad. This is not what they want but rather to be a part of the American community like anyone else. Sal had to go through a lot to become an American citizen and he himself, like others, is against allowing illegals to be able to work here without putting in their fare share. It is a burden to us all and it is a fact. Illegals come over here and work but pay no taxes and they send Billions home to Mexico which helps the Mexican economy not ours. That is one of the reasons the President of Mexico (Vincent Fox) www.msnbc.msn.com wants it to continue the way it is. And the fact of the matter is that Migrants do not want to become American citizens and are not going become one. They just want everything that American cititzens get but without putting in their fair share. Basically it is a snatch and run sort of mentality. Grab all you can while you can and leave only to come back and take some more.

Lets say I sneak into your home and eat your food, rest in your comfortable home take rides in your car as I work a job. Since I'm here anyway when you get home you decide to let me stay. I don't pay you for eating your food or the roof over my head. I keep most of all the money I earn and spend only a little. I let you worry about paying your property taxes, income taxes and even the insurance for health, home and auto. Why should I care if I get sick or injured, I'll just go to the hospital or local clinic and get it for free too. After all, the American citizens foot the bill so why should I worry about it. If I drive my car without the proper insurance and get in an accident that injures you and destoyes your car, again, why should I worry? After all, I know I'm not going to be here to be forced to pay the bills and if it gets to much, I'll just move or go back to Mexico for awhile. They don't know much about me because I'm illegal and can't track me.

Banning the Flag??

It is just crazy for an American High School to ban our own countries flag on it's campus. Skyline High School ( read more at http://tonguetied.us ) did just that very thing. This is our country and we should NOT be worried if some illegals or whomever living or visiting here are offended by it. This is American soil by god and it is appalling to have some that want us to not show the flag.
The public schools are owned by us, the American tax payers, those who are living here and going to our schools should know that the American flag will be flown and displayed at our schools. I feel it very disgraceful that some schools and colleges are telling students that they can not display the American flag on campus.

I read on the www.powerlineblog.com/archives/013550.php today about Mexicans' protesting about the immigration laws. There is also much addu about the
It also peeves me off that a bunch of Mexican flag wavers, mostly illegals, would find it within their rights to protest our illegal immigration laws. YOU are here illegally and you have no American rights to be protesting a gald dern thing. If you want to show us that you want to live here as an American citizen then you should be embracing our flag. Instead you want to wave the Mexican flag in protest. If you love Mexico so much then why don't you just go back home. Other wise, get citizenship, pay taxes and quit taking us for a ride. I, for one, am just a bit tired of you recieving free health care, free schooling, assisted housing and a free ride at our expense. Our schools and business's are catering to you with making english speaking american learn spanish. This is wrong as you should be learning our language. Why should you get benefits from a system you don't put into? You are here ilegally so you are a criminal in that respect and robbing us blind not to mention a national security threat. There are many immigrants from many countries who came here to live and work and they became citizens. In a manner of speaking, there are many Legal Mexicans over here who pay taxes into the system. Not only are you robbing us you are robbing your own people.

KT Did and Her Patriot Guard Ride

KT attended and stood tall and
proud this week and I think you might like to go to her site and read up on it. She and the other riders didn't let the rain stop them from their important journey to make sure to show their respects.
It is posts like hers that make me proud to be a part of the Patriot Guard Riders and my journey has just begun.
KT, if I was to see you I'd give you a big hug and pat on the back.
Two Wheel Inn

Alright, here is another good place to stay. The idea, like this, was once discussed on the Garage Choppers site. We had talked about the problem of being on the road on a motorcycle and the worry of your bike being in the motel parking lot in the morning. We all wondered why someone didn't do this for the motorcycle crowd as it has grown by leaps and bounds. I'd build one myself if only I had the cash outlay to do so. During the riding season you would not have enough rooms for everybody but you wouldn't have any empty either.
The http://www.twowheelinn.com has a garage attached to every room which will accommodate two motorcycles. There is also a walk in door from your room to the garage so you can keep a watchful eye on your baby. They are located on U.S 129 in Robbinsville, North Carolina and just a 25 mile ride from the tail of the dragon. If you want twisties then the tail of the dragon is for you with it's 318 curves along eleven miles of awesome scenery. Or a tire chirp from the Nantahala Gorge and the twisters on Wayah Road. The Skyline parkway is even closer for a more laid back ride.
The price for the rooms is a bit more than the other places I've mentioned however...the rooms are extremely nicely outfitted. Buy your own grub and cook it up in your rooms kitchen and then the room becomes more affordable. Plus you can be cooking up your meal and performing any maintenance chores on your bike without worry of the daylight or weather. Plus, you won't have the worry about your tools and bike going missing when you ain't looking.
I've told you about it so now go take a gander at the site.

More Carolina Camping at Riders Roost

Back in 1989, two brothers, Roy and BC along with a couple brothers decided to make a fun mountain haven just for bikers. This place is Exclusively for the two wheel crowd and that means NO RV or four wheel camping of any sort.
This place is one of those more...Adult oriented places. NO! I don't mean that sort of adult oriented place. It is a place for adults to hang, cut up and play while having a good time so no children allowed.
They do not have many rules, only six, but the rules that be are absolute. "What are the rules?" you ask. Well the rules are:
NO Weapons
NO Trouble
NO Attitudes
NO Glass
NO Drugs and
NO Animals.
I don't think those are to harsh of a list of rules to abide by. After all, this is a place to have fun after all.
The Roost has both ten cabins and plenty of camping spots with very reasonable prices. They'll even feed you and the morning coffee is a freebie. To find out more go visit http://www.ridersroost.com and see all that Roy and BC have to offer. It's a great site with plenty of info spelled out in more depth.
Motorcycle Camping in North Carolina

Here is a nice spot to go to if you want to do a bit of camping on your motorcycle. The Blue ridge motorcycle camp ground has most everything you'll need. They even have some nice cabins at forty bucks a pop. You can sit on the porch of some and enjoy listening to the water going by. Tent camping of course is abundant and don't worry about eating either. There is a very nice kitchen set up also.
Ride the mountains and surrounding area to take in the beauty and breath taking views.
If you want to see what all else there is to do and see then go to http://www.blueridgemotorcyclecamp.com and check out everything they have to offer.
Motorcycle camping without the worry of staying at an RV camping site. This is one of the places to relax with others who are on two wheels to get away from all the bull.

This is one of the types of places that I still plan on having in my magazine. I just need to find more of them from around the country. I have a few more but still NEED more also.
