Zenith Stereo Console Model X 940(Up Date: This unit is a 1967 Model all hand wired. X = 1967, Y= 1968 and a Z model = 1969. They cost then almost as much as a car. Today people are hooking MP3 players and the like and Plazma TV's through them for Theater quality sound)
NO! It's not a motorcycle but does sound and look great. Having a lot of fun with this old vintage stereo system. Everything works on it and it is in fantastic shape. My wife and I were put in charge of getting rid of some of her late WWII veterans cousins things. His wife had passed years ago and he at the end of 2011, so the home was still filled with both of theirs belongings. His sons and their wives had been up from out of state going through everything - a daunting task - and what was left, except for some furnishings, we are to dispose of. We took many items to donate to the Hospice league but some items we are torn with. The couple has been our neighbors for years.

We have been trying to find more information on this console modal X 940 but have not found a whole lot. It is from the early to mid sixties I gather but can't pin it down. Me, I want to keep it because it is in such fine shape and the sound is so much better than any digital system you find today. Its like theater sound really. I have a ton of vinyl I can spin on it.
Searching all along the net this model and this particular componant layout is different. Most of the Zenith models found have the record player on the left side while this one is on the right.
Just some of the additional hookups on the back panel. Zenith offered as an option external speakers, wish I could find a set of those babies. This one also has headphone jack on the back which is odd because most headphone jacks are near the radio portion in the cabinet. These old systems have such quality and were made to last, more than can be said for today's technology, but so many have been tossed at dumps for years. The cabinets themselves are of solid wood and very well constructed unlike particle board pieces of today. I find that these are making a come back and the $20 and $40 yard sale finds will do nothing but go up in price as more people rediscover these jewels and especially now that many people are finding the vinyl records are far superior in sound quality to CDs'. This thing is a true beauty, really it is.
This might be a new hobby for me, finding these old systems to save before the value begins to climb out of reach.

Cool beans Kt Did, can you tell me what year it is and model name? It has an awesome sound quality and there is an adapter you can make now to use MP players with it plus another to use with your TV set of flat screen for cinema sound. Old technology meets new.

yup, we sold my grandparents one a few yrs back and regret it. ours had the stereo on the left, the right was where we kept albums upright, and the middle face had slider doors with a large screen tubed tv. they bought it at sears (i think) in late 50's or early 60's. it worked perfectly when we let it go...

i can see rebuilding these having a big demand wooley. go for it!

mq01,
Sure brings back the memories doesn't it.
If you come up on another one grab it now before the ideas catch momentum and prices go way up. People are now rediscovering these older models with the Tubes. The sound is much richer and warm feeling than any new age electronics can produce. Thats why some are hooking up MP playes etc to these old systems. Also, vinyl is making a come back because CDs lose something and it's being found there too the sound quality is better than a CD. Just because something is new doesn't mean it's better as the salespeople want us to believe.
Happy hunting. Oh! And go check out this site for more info on some of what I've said. www.ccrane.com

I just bought one exactly like the one shown here a couple weeks ago at a yard sale for $20! It must have been sitting around someone's house for years without being used because it looks brand new and works just as well. What a find! I have my mp3 player plugged in through the "tape in" jack on the backside and works great!

Congrats on the find. ccrane.com is a good place to begin. But, if you take the back off there is usually a schematic glued inside the cabinet.

Bill, you found a jewel. Keep in mind that people are just rediscovering these great units and the prices will start to climb. Like old Chevy Nova's, some time ago they could be had for a few hundred, now the value has gone up to $3000 just for a rolling chassis that needs lots of work.

We just bought this exact console for $40. It works great and we love it but are completely clueless on where to begin to get it set up to use with a TV and Blueray. I went to ccrane.com and was lost. This is really not in my skill set. Where do I begin to find the information to make the adapter. I do not know anything about wiring. Thanks!

Hi Smith Family,
I would suggest taking pictures of the back of the console of the input and output jacks. Get some pictures of the output/input jacks on your television set as well then head over to your local radio shack and tell them what you want to do.
Congrats on your find and I think you'll be happy you got it.

My aunt had one of those when I was growing up. Solid state (transistor) and wonderful sound! 70 watts per channel, will shame most newer systems. A fine piece of furniture to boot!

I just bought a Zenith Model Y940W "The Andersen" at an auction last night for $25. Brought it home today and it works great. Love the sound of the old record player!! Do you have any idea of the value or a website that can give me that info?

Hi, i just found this model at a goodwill. Mine is exactly the same as yours, except instead of a holder for the records, there is an 8 track player. The record player plays okay, the radio works excellent, and I have yet to find an 8 track to try in the player.

Do you mind telling me where the port is that serves as an mp3 adapter? I haven't seen that on mine.

Thanks for the info.. all the best!
Erin

Hi Erin, That's great, and the 8-Track is a big plus.
On the back of the unit you should see some input jacks, these were used for external components like Real to real tape decks - recorders and such back in the day. You could also plug in mics back then making your stereo sorta like a karaoke machine.

I just found that model at an estate sale $10. It sounds great. I'm listening to Bill Monroe and loving it.

Allie Truex, you sure found a nice unit to highlight Bill Monroe with, the tones should be superb and not tinny.
